Netflix Unveils New Feature That Asks ‘Are You Still Watching?’ Every 30 Seconds
Netflix has sparked global outrage after announcing a new “viewer engagement enhancement,” which will now ask users “Are you still watching?” every 30 seconds, regardless of what they’re doing, how awake they are, or whether they’ve even started the episode.
The update, rolled out overnight without warning, interrupts all content — films, series, documentaries, even the Netflix logo animation — to ensure viewers remain “emotionally present and spiritually committed to the binge.”
Early testers report the feature is “deeply unsettling.” One user said she spent more time clicking “Yes” than actually watching her show. Another claimed the prompt appeared while he was still on the home screen, choosing something to watch. “I hadn’t even pressed play,” he said. “It judged me before I’d made a mistake.”
Netflix defended the change, insisting it was designed to “combat passive viewing” and “encourage meaningful relationships between humans and content.” Critics argue it’s simply the digital equivalent of someone standing beside the sofa asking, “You still there, pal?” every half‑minute.
The update also includes a new “Concern Mode,” which activates if a user clicks “Yes” more than 40 times in a row. At that point, Netflix pauses the show and gently suggests, “Maybe take a wee walk?”
Some users have reported even stranger behaviour. One viewer claims the prompt appeared during a dramatic cliffhanger, blocking the reveal of a murderer until he confirmed he was emotionally ready. Another said the system asked, “Are you still watching?” during a cooking show, then followed up with, “Why though?”
Despite widespread frustration, Netflix says the feature is here to stay, though they are considering a premium tier where the platform “leaves you alone.”
