Corriedale: Two Dying Shows Crash Into Each Other at 70mph
In a desperate bid to halt plunging ratings, ITV recently aired Corriedale, the much-hyped one-off mash-up of Coronation Street and Emmerdale. The result? A chaotic motorway smash so absurd it made Casualty look like a documentary.
The episode opened with the Pennines’ finest traffic jam: Carla Connor’s factory minibus, laden with Underworld knickers samples, sideswiped Charity Dingle’s tractor hauling prize-winning sheep. Within seconds, the M62 became a battlefield of flying fleece, overturned Rovers Return pints, and one very confused Roy Cropper clutching a tray of hotpot.
Tim Metcalfe, ever the philosopher, pulled Chas Dingle from the wreckage and asked earnestly, “Is Emmerdale where that plane crashed?” Chas, covered in airbag talc, replied, “Aye, and Manchester’s where the rain started.” Viewers voted for Charity and Carla’s “iconic” lift scene; instead we got them arguing over who caused the pile-up while sharing a single airbag.
Highlights included Steve McDonald mistaking Jai Sharma for his long-lost mate Vikram (“You’ve not aged a day, lad!”), only for Jai to mutter, “Wrong soap, wrong decade.” Meanwhile, John Sugden met a grisly end – again – this time under a toppled flock of Corriedale sheep, proving death really is the gift that keeps on giving in soaps.
Critics hailed it “cinema”; fans demanded a permanent merger. ITV insists it’s a one-off. Pity. Nothing says “revitalised schedule” like two dying shows ramming into each other at 70mph.
